Definition

A proficiency evaluation that qualifies a pilot to fly a specific aircraft type at a particular flight school. Typically involves a flight with an instructor and may include an oral quiz.

Why It Matters

Checkouts are usually required for solo and rental flights but not for dual instruction. Most schools organize aircraft into groups (e.g., all C172s share a checkout) and set currency requirements (minimum flights or hours within a lookback period).
