STC (Supplemental Type Certificate)
Definition
An FAA approval for a modification to an existing aircraft type design. STCs authorize specific alterations like avionics upgrades, engine swaps, or structural changes.
Why It Matters
STCs can affect maintenance requirements and scheduling. A G1000 retrofit via STC may introduce new AD compliance requirements or change inspection procedures. The maintenance tracking system needs to account for installed STCs.
